The Unnecessary Prank

Time: 11:38pm
Mood: Tired..
Song of the moment: Gwen Stefani - Rich Girl

My sister Kathy is sick. So I was chatting with her over MSN this afternoon and she mentioned that she had a runny nose. So being the great big sister that I am, offered to stop by Shoppers to pick her up some kleenex.. but not just any kleenex.. oh no! The ones with lotion on them b/c we all know what rough kleenex can do to a nose :S So after school I set out to Shoppers to make this purchase for my sister.

As the bus pulls up in front of Shoppers I get a textmsg from Kathy, which reads: "karen..can u buy water??.yummy! -kathy". Flashback #1: yesterday, since I didn't go back to Markham this weekend and I hate drinking Hamilton tap water, I bought a 12 pack of 500mL Aquafina bottled water from Shoppers. So when I got this msg, I was thinkin "What?! She finished off all the water ALREADY??!!??". I figured, she was sick and when you get sick you should drink plenty of fluids! So I picked up the kleenex with lotion on them + another 12 pack of 500mL Aquafina bottled water @ Shoppers. Flashback #2: on thursday, since I had joined the Mac DB team, I had to go to this fitness training session which has left my triceps in excruciating pain (it still hurts.. I can't even tie my hair! It hurts so bad!). 12 pack of 500mL water = 6L of water = 6kg (at 4°C for those chem-eng geeks) of dead weight I had to carry in my backpack. So trudged home, with this weight on my back, slipping and sliding through the streets of Hamilton. I finally reached home, clumped up the stairs, went into my sisters room and painfully dropped my bag on her floor. I said to her "You're lucky you're my sister, and I love you cuz I just lugged 6L of water from Shoppers for you". You know what she says to me? "I was just kidding!" SHE WAS JUST KIDDING *sigh*

Kathy.. *shake my fist at you* I will get you back!

Martini (Blue Caraco, Lime Juice & Raspberry Syrup)

Girls Night (Flowers)

Time: 11:50am
Mood: Cheerful (although I did wake up at 9am!)
Song of the moment: Gwen Stefani - Rich Girl

This week has been absolute madness.. so it was good to have something to look forward to on Friday night: Girls Night Out. My friend Jen likes to throw these girls night out events once in a while, a night where boys don't matter.. it's all about the girls. The night, like every girls night we've had, started out at Jen's apartment. We chatted, had some snacks and drank. We had some pretty wicked martini's that were made up on the spot (one is depicted above.. taken w/ my camera phone :D). I got drunk really fast, partially because I'm a cheap drunk and 2 martini's are WAY above any limit I can usually handle before getting into the uncomfortable-drunk phase. It's strange.. I think I've drank more as a grad student than an undergrad student.. odd huh? And yet my tolerance for alcohol has not increased. I'm slowly beginning to think I'm allergic to alcohol (it makes my skin itch.. isn't that a sign of food allergy?). Anyway, after chillin for a bit, we all put flowers in our hair (the theme of the night.. last time was umbrellas). If anyone was to ask us about why we had flowers in our hair, we went with the same faux story as the one we used for Umbrella night: "We're out celebrating our friend's first orgasm" haha! Last girls night we had a lot of guys guessing who it was.. I had a few guys come up to me and say "It's you right? I KNOW it's you!" WTF? haha! We headed out for a night on the town, but the club we intended to go to was closed (on a Friday night? Are you MAD?!) so we ended up goin to the Funky Monkey. It started out ok.. the DJ was dropping some wicked tunes.. but then it got annoying.

The place, in my opinon, was WAY too packed. every 10 seconds I was being pushed or had someone wearing a cold jacket brush up against me, giving me a cold shock. I almost got elbowed in the face by that ridiculously tall guy :S At one point, there was this really drunk-outta-his-mind guy "dancing" near us but he just kept bumping into us.. so I asked him "Are you retarded?". HAHAH he didn't hear me, but his friend did, told him and they moved away from us! haha! Oh my lip is gonna get me in trouble one day...

I really enjoy these girls nights out. Why? Most of my friends are guys.. and I think this is the first time since high school I have a group of girl friends that I can hang out with and do girlie stuff with. Not to say I don't have any girl friends, I do! Just.. not in a group like this :)

Tuesdays with Morrie

Time: 9:05pm
Mood: Tired as hell
Song of the moment: Travis - Flowers in the Window

So today I was sitting in the lab conducting experiments, and since these experiments required me to put in a sample and wait 5 min for the analysis, I was pretty much sitting bored. So I decided to pick myself up a book from the bookstore during my long awaited lunchbreak (I took lunch at 2).

I had no idea which book to get. So I browsed through the bestsellers sections because I figure, you can't go wrong with a bestseller. Most of the books were hard cover and were a bit too rich for my blood for a spur-of-the-moment book. I opted for a soft cover, cheap yet interesting looking book: Tuesdays with Morrie. It's by Mitch Albom, who's also the author of The Five People You Meet In Heaven, a book I really want to read. The only thing I've heard of about this book was that it was good.. I had no idea what it was about. I quickly bought the book and went back to the lab.

In the lab, I sat down and finally read the back, which was full of reviews and I began to realized the topic of this book was about death. I kind of froze. I have this slight fear of death, and I began to wonder if I had chosen a book that I'm not willing to read. But hell, it was better than reading the textbook on Clay Nanocomposites that I had brought into the lab with me. So I began to read it. And let me tell you.. what a great book. I'm completely hooked. It's a story about a professor, who is dying from Lou Gehrig's disease, and his reflections on life as he approaches his last days. It's interesting to see how death, whether you're near it or someone you love is near it, changes your whole perspective on life. One particular quote I find is pretty much a summary of the whole book, a point that is repeated throughout the book is this: "Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live". This book makes you look at things in a whole different light. I'm not quite done the book yet, but I'm pretty sure by the end of this evening I would have read the book, cover to cover. Truely a remarkable book... makes you remember the important things in life.

On a side note: Happy Birthday Jehnan! We'll see each other before the year is up ;)

Me throwing a snowball @ my daddy.. needless to say.. w/ my aim and the fact that it wasn't "snowball" snow.. it didn't make it...

You know when to stop when you have internal bleeding

Time: 8:43
Mood: In PAIN!
Song of the moment: Jimmy Eat World - Kill

This weekend we had a mother of a snowstorm... we must have gotten a good 20-30 cm of snow! And we all know what that means.. time to take out those shovels and snowblowers! I was supposed to go snowboarding on saturday but because of this snowstorm, it got postponed until sunday (yesterday). So saturday I spent my day shoveling the driveway (and the backyard.. for Pepper) twice but I did get to have a bit of fun (as captured by my daddy in the picture above). Luckily Jimmy was there to help me shovel or I wouldn't have been able to snowboard the next day!

Sunday, Jimmy, Sean, Dave, Eileen, Allen, Amy and I headed up to Mt. St. Louis for some snowboarding. It was a great day.. not as fridged cold as the day before and it was sunny! I had a lot of fun but I'm totally hurting from it today! I was completely saved by these toe warmers my mom had given me.. they're these pads that when exposed to air causes an exothermic reaction (hooray chem nerds! haha), and you stick 'em on your socks so they keep your toes nice and warm for a full 6 hours :) They're absolute heaven!! haha! I'm happy to report I'm gradually improving my snowboarding skills! I managed to smack my head when I was going down the hill... I fell on my butt, then my head whipped back and I hit the back of my head *ouch* not fun! I got whiplash from that hit plus a mild headache.. which I still have.. is that bad? So during lunch, we were talking about when we would know when to stop snowboarding, and Dave says "Oh.. you stop when you get internal bleeding!" HAHAH we were like... wha? oh Dave!

My butt is so sore :( LoL my butt got an email "get well card" from Rita's butt.. Thanks Rita's butt!

Other notes: we caught 2 mice with Marta's trap! Hooray! so that means.. 4 down... how many more to go? eeks!

Engrish

Time: 7:52pm
Mood: Happy (I just laffed my ass off for 15 min straight.. you'll find out why soon)
Song of the moment: The Killers - Mr. Brightside

This morning, as I was preparing for school I found a card that Rita had sent to me a while back. On the front of the card read:

Comfortable
Just for you
Love is a nature's way of giving a reason to be living
my heart is gladder than all these because... my love is come to me...

There's a picture of a cake on a plate. If this didn't make any sense to you, try reading this after a night of drinking! That's exactly what had happened when I first got this card.. I came back home after getting pretty tanked, read this and thought "This makes no sense.. oh it's probably because I'm drunk". But when I read it the next morning.. I realized.. it was Engrish.

So what is Engrish? It's when asian countries attempt to translate their language into english phrases, with MAJOR grammerical or spelling errors. The above is a prime example of what I'm talking about. So today, I happened to come across this website FULL of Engrish stuff. www.engrish.com. This page has had me laughing so hard, I almost peed my pants. I even found a picture of a sign I saw in Taiwan. Brought back memories... :D.

Asian flush? What Asian flush?

Time: 7:54pm
Mood: Excited (new Scrubs tonite!)
Song of the moment: Jimmy Eat World - Futures

I have a feeling this song is going to be my song of the moment for a LONG time. This song makes me happy.. every time I hear it.. it's on repeat on my iTunes player. It's an optimistic song.. w/ an optimistic beat :)

So Thursday night I was lying in bed, about to fall asleep when I hear rustling noises in my room. I got up, turned on the light.. the noise disappeared. I turned off the lights and lay down on my bed.. and like a minute later I hear the same rustling noise near my bookcase. I turn on the light, walked over to my bookcase and I saw a bloody mouse there. There was a mouse in my room!! I FLIPPED. I tried to look for it, but I couldn't find it. So I kept turning off my light, and sitting silently until I heard the mouse again. I tore my room apart that night looking for that f%#king mouse. I was up until 3:30am trashing my room. I managed to figure out that the mouse was in my closet, and to me that was better than it being in my room so I made sure my closet door was closed, put some of those sticky mouse-catching pads right outside my closet door just in case that little sucker decided to crawl out, and went to bed. I was so tired the next day...

So Friday night, since that mouse kept me up until the wee hours of the morning, I was too damn tired to do anything so Jimmy and I stayed in. Saturday was a lot more eventful than the night before. Saturday, Jimmy and I went to see In Good Company @ the AMC. That movie was really really good. It was one of those feel good movies, and it reminded me of what was really important in life. No money in the world could ever replace the good company I have in my life. Saturday night we headed out to Andy Poolhall for Troy's birthday. It was hilarous because Mei (Troy's gf) planned this get together, and he knew about it, but when a bunch of us walked into the bar, he was like "what are you doing here?" haha :) Anyway, the poolhall/bar was nice! The walls were painted red, and most of the decor was red so everyone looked like they had asian flush (or it looked like I didn't have asian flush when I drank)! That's a bloody brilliant idea! I'm gonna start going to clubs that are painted red only :) The decor was quite interesting, consisting of some modern art pieces, and this chair that made it look like you were sitting snug in between two huge testicals. Haha! Everytime I go out with that particular group of friends, I always go somewhere interesting :)

Sunday morning (.. ahem.. I mean early afternoon because I slept in), I went out for dim sum w/ Jimmy, Diana & Katie (Jimmy's sisters) and Ray (Katie's fiance). We headed to the Chinese Mecca (a.k.a Pacific Mall/Market Village) where we were lucky and fortuate enough to find a parking spot. Since we went kinda late, we got the "reject" carts. No I'm kidding.. but we had a very limited selection. After an hour of drinking excessively steeped chinese tea (we had to keep diluting it!) and eating reject chinese dim sum we headed off to a not-so-Chinese mall :)

Monday morning, I look into my closet to discover that f%@king mouse crapped all over my clothes. That little bastard! The thing was, I closed my vent over the weekend, hoping to freeze it out of my room. Instead, that little freak decided to keep warm in my clothes! AGH! I was so angry! I had to wash all my clothes. Msg to the mouse: This means WAR! *grr*

The Best Advice

Time: 9:34pm
Mood: Thirsty (mmmm... water...)
Song of the moment: Jimmy Eat World - Futures

I recieved, what I believe, the best advice today: "Just run!". This was referring to what I should do if the band saw I was using happened to malfunction or if the blade broke. But you know.. this little tidbit of advice can actually be applied to various scenarios. Yes, my mind wanders in strange places.

Let me give you a few examples. A bus is coming right at you.. what should you do? Just run (away from the bus). You gotta puke.. what do you do? Just run (towards the bathroom). You're walking to school/work and you realize you are running late.. what to do? Just run. You're wildly out of shape... in fact your grandma can outrun you in a heartbeat.. what should you do? Just run! See! This is a valuable piece of advice! I'm so glad I've passed on this wisdom to you all. In fact, I think it should be a law (like law of physics.. not legalize it): "If in doubt.. RUN!" Fabulous!

You all think I'm a nutcase now :D

The Worst Feeling

Time: 12.48am
Mood: Sad
Song of the moment: Howie Day - Collide

I think the worst feeling anyone can feel is the feeling of being forgotten. For a while now I've been struggling with the fact that my grandfather, my most favorite person in the world, has no recollection of me whatsoever. It' s old age.. and a series of strokes that have left him in this state. I know if he had a choice, he wouldn't have forgotten me. But it hurts so much to think he doesn't know who I am. In a sense, I miss him very dearly. As I write this my heart aches.

And that has got me thinking to my friends. It's so hard to keep track of everyone these days.. everyone seems to have their own life and I wonder... have I been forgotten by them too? To all my friends out there: during this week long reflection I have thought of each and every one of you. I just wanted to let you know, you are most definitely not forgotten.

.. and then there were 6

Time: 12:03am
Mood: Meh..
Jimmy's Song of the moment: Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams

Friday night the Taiwan Crew sent off another member of our group. Frank is moving back to HK on Tuesday, so some of the remaining members of the Taiwan Crew + 2 went to have one last get together with him. It was sad seeing another friend move away.. esp to Asia. They're all going there. We spent the evening drinking our bubble tea (well.. Jack never got his!) and reminisced on the good times we had on Loveboat 1998. We talked about stories that I have no recollection of whatsoever.. like the bumper car incident (which I am not entitled to talk about!). I do remember sitting in the bumper car with Frank.. but other than that.. I pulled a blank! But we did have some good times! It was sad saying good-bye to Frankie. First AC left, then Vic... then Masa, and now Frank. Now all that's left is me, Vivian, Rob, Jack, Vince and Janne.

This weekend was full of good news too :) I found out that 2 couples I know are getting married this year! I'm quite excited for them, but makes me wonder when it will be my turn! Not giving away any ideas Jimmy.. *cue elevator music*

I went to see Life Aquatic saturday night and I really enjoyed the film. I really wanted to see this movie because I had enjoyed past Wes Anderson's films (Rushmore, The Royal Tennenbalms). I really like the style the film is presented, and I love the way in all movies, all the lead characters seem to have a dysfunctional relationships with each other, but things just work between the characters. The comedy is not slapstick humor or "I'm falling out of my seat" funny, but it was quite humerous in it's own way.

I got the Jimmy Eat World and Keane CD. I've wanted these CDs for a while, esp after dl-ing them and just falling in love with the songs. Both CDs get the Karebear's *thumbs up* :D

If you havn't done so yet, please donate money to the Tsunami Relief Fund if you can. The Canadian gov't is planning to match donations made up to Jan 11th. As of this moment, you still have time. Please do so! Just imagine what would happen if you had everything you own just completely vanish... I'm sure you would want someone to help you. So please, donate. www. redcross.ca

The Mouse, The Snowboarder and the Wardrobe

Time: 11:22pm
Mood: Tired and in pain
Song of the moment: The Killers - Mr. Brightside

What an eventful few days! Tuesday evening I was chatting on my computer when I heard my roomate Rosie scream. The thing is, we're having a bit of a mouse problem here at my house, and Rosie is scared of mice so I knew it was a mouse. I ran downstairs to find Rosie standing beside the kitchen sink, with the water running, looking scared. Apparently this tiny mouse made it's way into the kitchen sink and was sitting among a few stacked dishes. The mouse was running around the dishes, trying to jump out of the sink. While I was thinking about how I would remove this mouse from the sink without having to touch it, I watched it. It began to bathe itself in the running water, and drank some water sitting in some dishes. I remembered I had a old pasta sauce jar sitting in my shelf, so I took that, placed a piece of cheese it in, and tried to lure the mouse into the jar. At this point I had an audience. Fatima and Kathy came down to check it out. The mouse ran into the jar, and I quickly scooped it up and twisted the lid on. Kathy and I went outside to release the mouse.. we were going to release it at a park about 3 blocks from our house but we got cold and tired and let it out after walking 2 blocks! haha! I still can't believe I caught a mouse in a jar... acrobatic little thing it was! It kept trying to jump out of the jar, and if I didn' t have the lid on.. I think it woulda jumped out!

So yesterday night I headed up to Collingwood with Alex, Marta, Laura, Jen, Dave and Art to go snowboarding at Blue Mountain (which was today). Dave has a place up there that he and his friends rented because the do ski patrol there, and he offered to let us crash there so that we wouldn't have to get up at 6am to catch the bus from school to get to Blue Mountain. We got to Collingwood around 11:00pm after a long drive through side roads (which was interesting). It was a small one room basement apartment, but it managed to fit all of us. It was such a cozy place! It was very nice :D We stayed up, drank beers and watched tv for a bit before crashing at 1:30. But I couldn't sleep until 3:30 :( Me and my semi-insomnia.. sucks ass! The next morning we got up at 8:30, got changed into our gear and waited for the ppl that took the bus to arrive. The thing was, we couldn't get equipment until the bus arrived with the organizer of this trip cuz he had all our money for the tickets. So we waited around.. apparently they hit traffic and were going to really late. But the guy pulled some strings and we got to get our equipment early! Hooray!

I chose to snowboard this time because.. well.. I felt it was time for me to try something new. Let me tell you.. it was so much fun! but I'm gonna be so sore tomorrow morning! I can't count the number of times I fell... on my ass and doing face plants. I think I hurt every joint on my right arm! There was this one time I fell on my ass so hard I felt the pain in my head! hahha! Hilarous! I did this awesome face plant after going down a bunny hill.. my legs flew up in the air from the mometum of my fall! hahaha! I couldn't get up for 2 minutes cuz I was laughing so hard at myself! Because of my need for speed, and being numb from falling so many times, I headed to a larger (but still a green circle) hill where on my last run of the day, managed to go down without falling. Yes Jimmy.. I know you're proud! hahha! It was so much fun but man my knees hurt :(

The drive home was brutal! We were hit with drifting snow and snowfall.. made visibility quite low. Well it was enough to keep Dave awake so he kept me company throughout the drive (and he was the only person that knew how to get back.. so that was good!). We gave up on the sideroads cuz they were too risky, and headed into Brampton to catch the highway. We stopped for gas, where Dave went into the store and bought a Bingo ticket. It was hilarous because he actually yelled out the numbers he got as if he was at a bingo hall! haha! He managed to win $6! So we stopped by another gas station so he could get 2 more tickets.. and guess what? He won $3 on each ticket! Lucky!!! haha!

Ok I'm beat.. must head to bed :S

My iPod Mini

a VERY delayed New Year's recap

Time: 8:10pm
Mood: Sleepy
Song of the moment: Jimmy Eat World - 23

So I've finally gave up on my web journal format and decided to try one of these blogger things out. I figure it'll be easier for me to update my website.. beats copying and pasting html code all the time.. makes it tedious.

So.. 2005 has rolled around. Right after the clock struck 12 I realized the time was ticking for me.. 8 months (if I get an extension) til I graduate.. 8 months to finish my project + a long-winded thesis. 8 months to the rest of my life. Sounds scary.... almost like a death sentence. Part of my is scared to start work.. part of me can't wait to finish school. School is all I know though. I've been in school for 21 years. 21 years?!?! I mean.. sure I've worked in co-op jobs.. but those work terms were like a break from school. After this, I won't get any breaks.

Last year, I would have to say was a great year for me. Not overly eventful, but just right. It's hard to have a life when school runs it. Although I did have a chance to go on vacation :D Cancun was awesome, and those who went with me would agree, those 7 days were just what we needed. I would have to say, those all inclusive packages.. *big thumbs up*. 2004 has taught me to keep the ones you love close to you, always see your favorite band in concert at least once in your lifetime, buying stuff online can be addictive, buying stuff online is never as easy as you think it is, Mexician WalMart sells cheap liquor, and never tell your friends you hate feet.. because they will exploit it to the fullest extent! .... ignore the last point! haha!

Things to look forward to in 2005? Graduating for one.. but I'm also scared of that too. But I am lookin forward in creating another milestone in my life. I'm also looking forward to buying all these fun accessories for my new iPod mini :) I know.. it's expensive on it's own.. but eh!
