5 Fab Days in NYC
Time: 12:51am
Mood: Tired
Song of the moment: The Cardigans - Carnival
And 5 fabulous days it was! Jimmy and I took a trip to the Big Apple during our extended long weekend. It was a weekend of fun, shopping and meeting my future relatives.... most of it was spent shopping though (poor Jimmy!)
Day #1: The first day was crazy! I was living on 2 hours of sleep (we had to get up at 4am to go to the airport.. and of course I was too excited to sleep!). We had a 2 1/2 hour layover in Detroit, where I happend to catch a glimpse of Jesse McCartney, the singer/actor who I guess is pretty popular in the States (but not too much so in Canada). I saw him at the McDonalds.. he was infront of me in the lineup. Haha... so star sighting #1. After getting to Newark and waiting an hour for a bus to take us into Manhattan (the buses are so unreliable!), we finally arrived @ Grand Central Station. June (Jimmy's cousin) met us at the bus station, then we were wisked away to meet Jackie (June's sister) for lunch. I forgot the name of the cafe we went to, but it was kinda like Marche's, where you buy your food in a "marketplace" and then u pay for it. After lunch we headed to June's place, dropped off our luggage, then headed out again! We walked over to Ground Zero and caught a glimpse of the site and all the construction going on around there. It's so hard to believe that just 4 years ago those twin towers stood up tall and proud. It was really sad and I guess it made the tragedy more real. We then headed across the street to the Century21 mall, which was a large discount store. You get all the name brand stuff for cheap. And that's where I picked up my very first purchase.. a Chinese Laundry purse! Oh shopping was intoxicating.. esp since I havn't done it in so long. And with that.. it began (the shopping I mean! haha). After browsing shoes and purses for a good hour (I stress again.. poor Jimmy!), we walked over to the Sea Port (which is also within walking distance of her place.. June lives right near Chinatown), then headed over to the Staten Island Ferry to get a drive-by look @ the Statue of Liberty. It was good cuz the ferry was free! The sun was setting at this point so we decided to grab some grub. We went to this Mexican Restaurant called El Cantinero located at 86 University Place. It was so festive in there! And the food was great for a reasonable price! After dinner we rushed home, changed into something nite-life-like and hit the town! June's friend's sister was holding a birthday bash @ this club near Chinatown (again.. I forgot the name!). The clubbers were almost all asian.... it was like azn nite @ any T.O club. The club was nice though! Drinks were pricy but mines came w/ a blinking ice-cube! We stayed out until 1.. and that's when I had to call it quits... I was so tired!
Total purchases: 1 Chinese Laundry bag
Day #2: Jackie and June took us out for lunch at a Chinese diner, grabbed some icecream at the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory on Bayard St. (they had really good flavors.. I went w/ the almond cookie). June took off cuz she had to study, so Jackie showed us around. She took us through little Italy, which really reminded me of Italy, and to Soho for some more shopping fun! I bought quite a bit that day.... I don't even remember which stores we went into! But I do remember going into Sephora to get some eye makeup because of star sighting #2. I don't know her name, but she was in one of the episodes of Sex and the City, the one where Carrie lost her shoes at a party. The lady we saw played the host of the party.. and apparently she won an Oscar for her work in the movie "Paper Moon" (these are facts according to Jackie and June.. man they are just full of knowledge! haha). After a whirlwind day of shopping (Jimmy did buy something... he bought the Seinfield S4 DVDs haha) we met up with June again, along with Jimmy's other cousins Natalia and Elaina, who came in from Queens. We had dinner at this Thai restaurant called Klong, located at 7 St. Marks Pl. It reminded me of Springrolls in Toronto... good food, big portions at a great price. After dinner, we decided to catch a movie.. Star Wars Ep 3 to be exact. We headed to Times Square where we watched it in this HUGE AMC theater (I think we had to go up 4 stories to get to our theatre!). Before the movie, we walked around Times Square, where I marveled at the bright lights and huge flashy display screens.
Total purchases: 1 Stila Eyeliner, a t-shirt from Armani Exchange, a fun-dressy tanktop from Banana Republic, 1 short summer skirt from Forever21
Day #3: Started the morning with brunch w/ June, Jackie and Natalia at Cafe Orlin (41 St. Marks Pl.). Then Jackie and Natalia took us to Bloomingdales. Man these department stores are just massive! You just can't walk the whole thing.. it's impossible! We did more shopping that day with some sight seeing squeezed in between. It started raining half way into our day but that didn't stop us from seeing Trump Towers, Tiffany's, Rockafeller Center and the outside of NBC studios. But it did stop us from walking around Central Park :S After a day of walking, we headed to Queen's with Natalia to have dinner with her family. The subway ride was pretty long. They live out in Flushing, Queens in the Chinatown area. I got to meet Jimmy's other uncle and aunts and his cousin Richard. After dinner, Jimmy's cousins gave us a tour of Flushing, and we went out for bubble tea :)
Total purchases: a nice top from H&M.. which I later returned b/c it didn't fit right (the change room lineups were too long)
Day #4: June took us to this restaurant for lunch called Republic, which was located at Union Square. It's a trendy noodle house that feels sort of like a cafeteria (you sit on these long benches). She took us around to 34th street, where we caught a glimpse of the Empire State Building and Macy's. We actually went into Macy's... damn it's massive! June took off to study and Jimmy and I suddenly found ourselves alone.. with no guide. Since it was a nice and sunny day we headed to Central Park and walked around the lower half the the park. It was nice to get away from the city within the city. I always find it bizzare to find yourself at a park surrounded by trees, then you look up and you see skyscrapers (I had that experience in San Francisco too). Central Park was really nice! After, we headed back to June's, where Jimmy's aunt was preparing a dinner for us. Actually, we headed back, then went back out again because I wanted to buy something @ the Sea Port (I wanted to go to Victoria's Secret.. need I say more? haha) so we headed out again. I had only intended to stay there for a half hour but I ended up staying for an hour (I bought more things than I intended to.. oops! haha). We ended up just chilling that night... and ordering more stuff from Victoria's Secret (June's gonna mail me my purchases! haha)
Total purchases: nice summer tank from Aeropostale, 2 sleep camis from VS, 1 bra from VS, capri pants from Express, stuff from Bath and Body works.. and oh yes.. underwear from VS (bought online)
Day #5: We met up with Mei Ling, Jimmy's other cousin from his dad's side (all the cousins I had met where on his mom's side) for dim sum before she headed to work. Dim sum was good, but it's better in Toronto! After eating and walking her to work, we headed back to Century21 for some last minute shopping. I ended up buying 2 purses and a make-up bag :S Hey! At least I didn't get any shoes (my mom woulda KILLED me if I did! haha). We headed back to June's place to pack up our stuff, then Jimmy's uncle walked us to the bus stop to take the bus into Newark airport.
Total purchases: 1 Guess purse, 1 Kenneth Cole purse and 1 XOXO cosmetic bag, 1 Cherry-patterned tie-belt from Chinatown (hooray cherries!)
And that was my trip to NYC :D I did a lot of walked.. and a lot of riding the New York transit line (the subway), shopped quite a bit and got to hang out with some really kewls people. The city is quite intoxicating and you can really get sucked into the lifestyle and the culture. Although I'm $400 poorer, I can't wait to go back!

4d2NYC!
Time: 11:47pm
Mood: Excited (4 more days!)
Song of the moment: Stars - Ageless Beauty
4 more days! 4 more days! I'm super excited about my upcoming trip to the city that never sleeps, the Big Apple.. New York City! Talking about it to friends and chatting it up with Jimmy's cousin has got me super excited! I can hardly wait! Just 4 more days.. it's gonna be a long 4 days though! Jimmy has come up with an itinerary... so much to do and see! And on top of that I'll be meeting future members of my extended family.. all his aunts, uncles and cousins that live there. It's gonna be a busy weekend (June has already warned me to wear comfortable shoes! haha).
This past weekend was pretty laid back for me. I watched "Unleashed" on Friday w/ Jimmy, Flo and Kin. I wasn't too big on watching the movie.. didn't appeal to me too much. But after watching it, I must say.. pretty good movie! And Jet Li actually said more than 2 words in this movie! hahaa! The fight scenes were awesome! Afterwards we went back to Jimmy's house and played poker :) We stopped playing after Flo and I won all the guys money (yea girls! haha). The next morning I had dragonboat practice. Last week I didn't paddle cuz of my strained hand. My hand is still a bit strained but I said f**k it.. I want to paddle! haha! It felt so good to paddle again :) It was a crazy practice but I had a good time :) My back was so sore yesterday!
So I'm back in the Hammer now... first time in 2 weeks. It feels strange. I'm so pissed.. I was driving back to Hamilton last night and a rock hits my windshield.. so now I got a little chip on it :( Bugger! I gotta get that fixed :S I saw Laura and Marta today.. havn't seen them in 3 weeks because they left for Florida for a conference a week before I headed back to the T-dot. We decided to go for a late coffee break at an on-campus Timmies but the first one we went to had stale donuts and the other ones were closed :( Sucky! Least we got some exercise! I spent most of my day in the lab, tying up loose ends with my results. Hopefully I won't have to go back now :S Haha today I even played badminton in my office! We have several raquets in our office.. 2 of which are mines (I have a squash and badminton raquet, Shiping and Xiaonan have badminton raquets, Hector used to have 2 tennis raquet ... I even have a dragonboat paddle in my office too!) Normally we usually "sword fight" with the raquets, but today Hector and I found a badminton birdie on Xiaonan's desk so we played. It was a really bad game though.. stupid low ceilings! haha. I love the people in my office.. they're so much fun. We do stuff like this all the time... sucks that Hector might be leaving us soon for a job :(
Oh.. now it's 3 more days til NYC :D yippie! :D

Hooray Oshawa!
Time: 5:09pm
Mood: grumpy.. I'm hungry!
Song of the moment: Stars - Ageless Beauty
So I was in Oshawa for 2 1/2 days @ a conference I had to go to. My source of researching funding requires me and all those who are funded to attend this annual conference just to give us an idea of what other research is going on in the field and how all these ideas come together, which I guess sums up ALL conferences out there. But really it was quite gruelling. I mean it was nice meeting others and learning about their research, but I couldn't really put my heart into it.
The place we stayed at was a university residence hall. It was brand new but it lacked one thing: no wireless internet! You could only gain internet access if you had a cable. I had brought a laptop with me so that I could work on my thesis (of course I didn't do much) and there was no where we could go to check our email.. so what did I do? I went to the bookstore and spent $5 on a internet cable and tada! Internet! I'm so glad I did that b/c there really wasn't anything to do in Oshawa. During the "free time" I chatted online with Jimmy and several other friends.. kept me sane! haha! Xiaonan and I managed to check out the big mall there.. nothing spectacular. I was really tempted to go home.
Every reserach group had to compete in a poster competition and each year our group never wins. We had gotten complaints in the past saying our posters were too wordy and there weren't enought pictures. This year we put more diagrams and pictures, but I still found it a bit wordy so I didn't think we had a chance on winning the first round of poster competition (there are 3 apparently!). So last night during dinner they announced 16 posters that would go on to the next round and to Xiaonan and I's surprise, they called us up! We won $50 gift certificates to Chapters! Hooray books! haha! Wow we were so surprised! But because we made it in the next round, we had to do an oral defense the next day. I'm so bad.. I convinced Xiaonan to do it! haha! Needless to say, we didn't make it past the second round but eh! We're totally happy we made it past the first (even our supervisor thought we wouldn't win! haha!). That was the only good thing that came out of that conference.. oh and of course the free booze they provided us for dinner! Woohoo! :D
Jimmy's playing hockey tonite *crosses fingers* I hope he scores :D Go baby! :D

A Dry Weekend
Time: 10:44pm
Mood: slightly tired
Song of the moment: The Arcade Fire - Neighbourhood #3
Happy Mother's Day to all you mother's out there :D I went to 2 mother's day celebrations this weekend :) One for Jimmy's mom (went out for dimsum) and of course, my mom :D For my mom this year Kathy and I (and Jimmy.. of course he joined in the fun) made dinner for my mom. And as a gift, we did a knock-off of something they sell on discoverychannel.com. Basically what it is is a picture frame that hold a picture of your dog and a mold that contains the paw imprint of your pet. It sells for about $50 but Kathy and I were pretty sure we could make a cheaper replica of it. I had bought a frame from an Umbra sale 2 years back and it was deep enough to hold a 3D mold of Pepper's paw print. I think making the knockoff cost us a total of $30 so we saved $20! haha! My mom loved the gift..and the meal :D so mother's day was a success! Hooray!
So this whole week I stayed in the T-dot to do work. But did I get much done? Not really. Partially because I strained my back AND my hand from typing (my hand was swollen.. and it still is! I couldn't even paddle at my dragonboat pratice this past saturday! I was so upset!). Actually I shouldn't be typing too much now but oh well!. I managed to go shopping again after that trip to Vaughn Mills... and I managed to buy this really nice red halter from Mexx. I've been looking for a red top like that ever since I got those pretty red shoes I got last year :D I've already made good use of it! I wore it out to me and Jimmy's anniversary celebration :)
This past Friday I headed downtown for Bashar's housewarming party. I hadn't seen him for quite some time so I was quite excited when he asked me to come. I met Jimmy downtown at UofT and we walked together to the Eaton Center, where we ate at Springrolls. Oh I really like that restaurant! So much good food for so cheap.. and it's a nice trendy environment! After that we walked around Eaton Center for a while, then headed to Bashar's place. We were kinda late but we were still the first ones there! haha! But it was kewls.. gave me an opportunity to talk to him and catch up on things. Before long, the party was in full swing. I had told myself I wasn't going to have anything to drink.. and I didn't! I'm so proud! I got to see Dimpy, Rehmat and Benita @ the party... it was so great seeing them again and catch up on our lives!
Saturday night a bunch of us went out for Mel's "Mel's Getting Old" Bash (I officially named the event! haha). It was Mel's birthday this past friday but honestly she doesn't look a day over 26 (haha Mel I know you're thanking me for that comment!). It was hilarous cuz Jenn got her a Jesus action figure, equipt with gliding action. haha it was quite the funny gift (I had fun rolling Jesus around Mel's kitchen counter! haha). Anyway, we started the evening @ The Bier Market which is located downtown and I tried cheese fondue for the first time! It was alright but all I was dipping was bread. So I had bread and cheese all night! haha! but it was good! After that we hit a jazz club called The Reservoir (I think). It was quite kewls because it had a live jazz bar and everything, but I think I wasn't in the mood for the music, especially since I was listening to all this upbeat music @ The Bier Market so I was in a dancing mood. I got bored quite quickly, and I think my friends did too. We left after a while and went back to The Bier Market and boy am I glad we did! The music there sprang me to life! They were playing 80s rock (and a bit of the latest rock music in the mix).. totally my thang! So we ended the evening on a fun note! And again I didn't drink.. thus my "dry" weekend. I'm surprised!
Better stop typing...Jimmy passed out on my bed... and I think I type too loud (he keeps waking up! eeks!)

Better stop typing...Jimmy passed out on my bed... and I think I type too loud (he keeps waking up! eeks!)

My New Wheels
Time: 12:33
Mood: ..I've got writer's block :S
Song of the moment: The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
On Saturday I said farewell to my blue Corolla, and said hello to my brand new Phantom Grey Corolla. I must admit, I was a bit sad leaving my blue baby behind, but I knew it was for the best. It sucks.. I get so attached to things. It took forever just to get my new car out of the lot though. The car salesman told us to come in Saturday morning, and he even called us at 10:30 to see if we were coming yet, but when we got there, he told us the paperwork was complete yet and we had to wait. This made me and my family quite mad, because he made it such an urgent deal that we come in early, but when we got there, it wasn't even ready yet. Stupid f**ks :S So finally, after a 1 1/2 hour wait, I finally got to drive my new car off the lot. As I left, I spotted my old car, said a silent and sad goodbye, and I left it behind.
Since it was past lunchtime, and my family was way starving, we decided to get some chinese take-out. To my disbelief, my mom made me drive my brand new car to Metro Square, a plaza full of asian restaurants, "hello kitty" stores, bubble-tea & bakery shops, and horrible chinese drivers. This is definitely not a place you want to take your "just off the lot" car. First and foremost, right when I got there I almost got T-boned by a stupid middle-aged chinese women driver driving a Benz (she was making a left into my lane, she obviously didn't know I had the right of way. Why do these stupid people that can't drive own such expensive cars?!?). Cars were cutting me off left right and center. I drove me insane! Luckily I survived this driver's nightmare.
So the next two weeks I'm actually back in the T-dot (well nxt week I'm in Oshawa for a conference, but eh.. close enough!). I figured I needed a change of environment because I was getting so restless in Hamilton. I'm just spending my time writing my thesis, but needless to say, it's really hard writing back @ home. Like yesterday for instance. Kathy and I hit Vaughn Mills to do some shopping. We got so tired walked around that mall (it's HUGE!) but I came out of it w/ a couple of purchases :D Hooray I can shop again!
But... I can't do too much shopping. I need to save up my money because for the Victoria Day long weekend I'm heading to New York! Hooray! Jimmy and I bought our plane tickets last wednesday! His cousins live there and offered us a place to crash and they're gonna show us around! I was talking to his cousin June and she kept telling me about all the places she was gonna take us to sightsee and to shop.. I'm giddy with excitement! This month is gonna be AWESOME! :D
Tomorrow is me and Jimmy's yearly anniversary. Actually, 7 years ago today he asked me out on that wonderful night after the fireworks @ Disneyworld in Florida (haha he asked me out.. I said maybe.. then I said yes the next day! haha I'm such a meanie!). Wow... 7 years. If that doesn't make you feel old I donno what does!
